Formentera is a small island with a peaceful atmosphere where tourists and residents coexist in a safe space. However, if any incident occurs during your holiday, here is how to handle it: Formentera, a safe destination

Language. The official language is Spanish alongside Catalan, which is official in the Balearic Islands. In most tourist establishments, English, German, Italian, and French are also spoken.

Currency. The official currency is the Euro, as in the rest of the Spanish territory. Any amount entering or leaving Spain that exceeds 6,011 Euros must be declared.

Opening Hours. Standard commercial business hours are from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. However, many establishments remain open through midday and until 24:00. On some Sundays or public holidays, many shops also open their doors to the public.

Camping and Campsites. Due to the small size of the island, there are no campsites in Formentera. Wild camping is strictly prohibited throughout the island; this includes spending the night in any type of vehicle, as well as sleeping on the beach or in wooded areas.

Emergencies. In case of an emergency, you can request immediate assistance (ambulances, firefighters, security forces) by dialling the telephone number 112, the emergency service of the Balearic Islands. The call is free of charge and you will be assisted quickly in 4 languages (Spanish, Catalan, English, and German).

Pets. Visitors wishing to travel to Formentera with their pets must ensure beforehand that this option is permitted at their chosen accommodation and that they meet the entry requirements for Spain. Furthermore, if the animal is considered a dangerous breed, it must travel with its respective certificate. In any case, general and specific regulations regarding the use of leashes, muzzles, and other applicable provisions must be observed. Local Festivals. The patron saint festivals of the island’s different towns are a must-attend event for both residents and tourists. Highlights include the festivities of Sant Jaume (in Sant Francesc) and the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the sea, with celebrations in La Savina and Es Pujols. The most important festivals are: Sant Ferran (30 May), Sant Joan (24 June), Virgen del Carmen Day (16 July), Sant Jaume (25 July), Santa Maria (5 August), Virgen del Pilar Day (12 October), Sant Francesc Xavier (3 December).

Electricity. Electrical current is 230 Volts and 50 Hz.

Petrol Stations. There are two petrol stations on the island, located on the main road between the towns of La Savina and Sant Francesc, and between Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran. Unleaded petrol (95 or 98 octane) and diesel are sold at these stations.

Tipping. Although completely discretionary, it is customary to leave a tip in bars, restaurants, and for hospitality service staff, normally between 5% and 10% of the total bill amount.
